Dunedin, New Zealand

Saturday January 14- Monday January 16

The interesting thing about an 18-hour time difference (New York to Auckland) is that it’s the same as a 6-hour difference provided you don’t worry about what day of the week it is. So flying to New Zealand isn’t that much different from flying home from Europe from a jet lag perspective. Well, a little different as the flight is also 18 hours rather than 6, and an entire day on the calendar vanishes!

We left New York late evening on January 14 and landed in Auckland mid morning on January 16. By mid-afternoon we were in Dunedin, a small city in the southeastern part of the South Island. Dunedin was settled by Scots, and while it is now quite diverse in its residents, it retains a certain Scottish / Victorian flair in its architecture and gardens. It also sports the steepest city street in the world (move over, San Francisco!). We wandered around the town in the afternoon, visiting the botanical gardens and the University of Otago (the oldest in New Zealand).
